EstroGel is a topical formula containing estradiol, an estrogen, in a metered-dose pump. Each metered dose is applied once per day to the skin, usually the arm. Most patients who buy EstroGel are menopausal women, though it may rarely be used in other patients.

While EstroGel is a lightweight dose of estrogen compared to some similar medications, it is an estrogen-only medication and as such patients, particularly women with an intact uterus, will want to also take a progestogen. Taking a progestogen with estrogen supplements reduces a woman's risk of uterine cancer and other complications. Rarely women who have had the uterus removed will also be instructed to take a progestin.

Product Overview

Patients who buy EstroGel will receive a metered-dose pump; each pump produces the exact same amount of medication.

Before the pump is used it needs to be primed; simply depress the pump three times. Discard any product that came out in the initial three pumps. It is now ready to be used.

Women buy EstroGel to alleviate moderate to severe symptoms of:

• Hot flashes
• Sweating
• Night sweats
• Vaginal dryness
• Vaginal itching
• Painful intercourse

EstroGel is not approved for treating all menopause symptoms, and it's unclear how beneficial, if at all, it is towards treating osteoporosis, hair loss, memory or concentration difficulties, anxiety, and other disturbances.

Women who are thinking about buying EstroGel simply to address vaginal issues may want to consider more direct application forms, such as Ovestine Cream, which is applied directly to the vagina. However, women experiencing other menopausal symptoms in addition to vaginal symptoms will likely have better results with EstroGel.

Most women will need to apply only one pump worth of medication per day. It should be applied to an arm, either the whole arm from the wrist to shoulder or only the upper arm, from the elbow to the shoulder. The product should be spread in a thin layer but not be rubbed in; it will dry on its own in just a few moments.

Note that the product is flammable until dry; avoid smoking or open flames while applying and for five moments after application.

Using EstroGel

As mentioned above, the standard dose for the majority of women is one pump worth of medication per day. Applying EstroGel is easy:

• Press the pump down fully one time, using the other hand to catch the gel that comes out.
• Apply the gel to the skin of the arm, usually from the wrist to the shoulder. Both the inside and outside of the arm are fine.
• Spread the gel thin but do not massage it into the skin.
• Allow the gel to dry for five minutes before covering it with clothing.
• Wash hands with soap and water to prevent others from being exposed to the hormone.

Equally important is what not to do with EstroGel:

• The gel will be flammable until dry; avoid smoking or open flames.
• Do not allow other individuals to handle the gel or contact the arm the gel was applied to for at least one hour; estrogen can be harmful to others.
• Avoid showering, bathing, swimming, or otherwise getting the application site wet for as long as possible after application.
• Do not apply this or any estrogen-containing product directly to the breasts.
• Do not apply EstroGel directly on or near the vagina.

Most women who buy EstroGel find it works very well at alleviating menopause symptoms. However, like all hormone-replacement therapies, it is not intended to last forever; treatment should periodically stop to see if it's still needed. Most women stop every six months, though it varies from every three months to one year. Most women will also eventually adapt to menopause and find replacing estrogen is no longer needed.
